EXCEPTIONAL STAFF, LOCATION & COCHEM EXPERIENCE
We booked Hotel Union for the central location and positive reviews but could not have asked for a better experience for our first trip to Cochem, which is only 2hrs from where we reside in Kaiserslautern, Germany. We stopped by Bernkastel-Kues on the way to Cochem and were running late, so we called the hotel to let them know our ETA 10:30pm. They said no problem and thanks for letting them know. Upon arrival, our reservation was already printed out and key prepared. We received instructions about the front door and breakfast. Once we dropped off our bags, we came downstairs and Mr Moussa asked where we were parked. We went outside and he gave us advice on the best spot to leave the car for a few days and chatted w/ us about everything there is to see and do in Cochem. The next AM when we were having breakfast, Ms Moussa greeted us and asked what time we arrived and how we slept. We were so surprised at how much the owners and staff cares about us and when we told them we do not eat pork, they even offered us some cold cuts in chicken. We also checked off everything on our list for hiking, eating, cable car and shopping the following day. The next AM we were greeted again and the staff delivered coffee/OJ/chicken cold cuts. The staff give their guests space to relax and enjoy the amazing view of the Mosel! It is central to everything and the river cruises are literally in front of the hotel, bars and restaurants and shopping in every direction.

Tourist trap with bad food
We were very disappointed with the restaurant. The schnitzel and the fries were cold, the gravy had the consistency of pudding. The service also disappointed us; despite multiple requests, we were frequently forgotten. We are still waiting for our mayonnaise today. None of the feedback was taken into account.

Insufficient
The Union Brauhaus is absolutely not to be recommended in terms of food. The schnitzels were not really good, mass-market, heated in the deep fryer, and totally dry.
The hope of making it somewhat tastier with the sauce proved to be hopeless. The sauce was slapped onto the dry schnitzel as a solid lump.
It could not be assumed to be an oversight, because all the plated dishes ordered with sauce were identical in terms of preparation, taste, and culinary skill.
One star in the rating is already no longer appropriate.
When addressed about the miserable quality of the food, the server reacted with the remark, "the plates are empty, and the food has never been complained about before."

Avoid, avoid, avoid
The restaurant at hotel Union is the place to definitely avoid in Cochem. The food is lousy, the service horrible and the wine list has almost nothing to offer.
I asked for the difference between two different Riesling wines - obviously from two different producers clearly stated in the menu. The answer: It's two different producers...How can you have a such ignorant waiter in the motherhood of German wine areas?
What is the difference between a Porsche and a Volvo? Two different producers???
There are plenty of other nice restaurants in Cochem, like the Hotel Am Hafen on the other side of the bridge where you are also gifted with a nice view of the castle.

Rather run down and overpriced / gloomy atmosphere
Staff: friendly and very concerned about your well being. Everybody tries to provide a familiar and cordial atmosphere.
Breakfast: average standard with everything you need. Nothing special.
Hotel: like most of the hotels in Cochem this building is cleary past its best days. The rooms are very old and the quality of the interior reminded me of a typical german flea market / garage sale. The bed in my room had the style of regular dorm in a youth hostel and there was a mattress lying next to it which definitely dated back to the 1980s (see the picures). The whole hotel is loaded of cheap romantic-style furniture reproductions and corny oil paintings (see pictures). Gave me the feeling of being in a haunted house from time to time.
